People are talking and laying the blame. When you are famous, they all know your name. It took some time to get it all behind you: phony passports, a brand-new name. They followed you 'round the Hague and London, secret agents from Inter- pol, veteran journalists from every major daily. I guess you're sorry that it all turned out this way, sorry that you ever heard of this town. You let your guard down. What do you think you'll do now? Find a quiet South Pacific island. Seek asylum in the PRK. But, when you're ready to face up to what you've done, be sure to call me.

Earthquake 02:46
In a raging blizzard, far from home, in the middle of an earthquake when you're lost and all alone, when you slip and suddenly you're flat on the ground, nursing your wounded pride, I wish I could tell you … everything will be OK. I think it probably will be, but that's not for me to say. If we can just keep our feet on the ground, we'll make it through somehow. And someday, when we’re old and gray, we’ll laugh at this. Even if it seems … bleak … now. Things… will get better... or… worse. [solo over a full verse, then go back into words for the next verse] It’s just like my old friend Ebenezer used to say: “You can have it all, but there’s a price you’ll have to pay.” If it’s a relentless life that you'd lead. Something will have to give.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these, days that some- times stretch into weeks, days framed by brief and fitful bouts of sleep, days of both triumphs and defeats. I often wondered how I'd earn my keep when someday I became a man. Would I fly airplanes or sell cars ... or bombs? Who'd have believed I could get paid for doing this, though? chorus: No big sur- prise, it couldn't last for- ever. In time, cracks began to form. And, in the end, of course, the price I paid was way … too … high. [short interlude on piano] 2. I never dreamed that I would climb so high … straight up the ladder of suc- cess. Can't say I even really tried that hard. (I) just had the knack for it, I guess. My mete- oric rise came sudden- ly. I can't de- ny it was a thrill. The classic cars, the trophy wife, the yacht... the swanky mansion on the hill up where the air ... smells ... sweet. All of it was unex- pected. But no matter, any- way. /it Almost be- fore it had be- gun, I knew the end ... was ... near. Vultures even more perverse than me … swooped in when they smelled the kill... bigger fish to eat the big fish that was me. (Now) all around the world, it's happening with fright'ning- ly increasing regulari- ty. Makes you wonder what will happen when there's only one fish left. Nobody told me there'd be days like these. I wonder if they even knew. Nobody told me there'd be days … like … these.

about

This is a short three-song EP I made during the Spring semester of 2023 at Salt Lake Community College, where I teach ESL. Jon Clark, the studio manager at the time, graciously paired me with a sound recording student, Jonathan Crymes, who helped me to realize the vision I had for these songs. Thanks so much, guys!

I originally planned for these songs to be a part of a larger collection of piano songs. That other collection should be ready by the end of the year (2023), so check back for more if you are enjoying these tunes.
