about

During long years of living on the fringes of Utah culture, I've learned that navigating the religious landscape is hard. It's not fun to disappoint your parents, and it can be exasperating to try to explain your point of view to die-hard loyalists who would never even consider questioning their leaders. But it can be equally disheartening to try to explain yourself to loved ones who have become stalwart atheists.

This medley of three short songs expresses the comfortable place I have reached recently, a place where I don't feel I need to prove anything to anyone anymore. On some level, I am definitely a believer. But the line โ€œAnybody's guess is as good as yours, sirโ€ in the second section of the song expresses my view that men (or boys) in suits don't have any better answers than I do.

But I don't want to lose sight of the fact that this song is, above all, a celebration of ecumenicism. I respect your right to believe as you do, so please also respect mine.

โ€‹Black or white, which is right? Help me find the way.
Honestly, I can't say. I see the world in shades of gray.
And who says that you have to choose? Why not em- brace a range of hues: red,
orange, yellow, green and gold and blue?

No one really knows for sure what is really true.
Life's an enig- ma- tic ven- ture.
Anybody's guess is as good as yours, sir. (doo-doo doo-doo doo)

Someone's been telling you sto- ries, stories that just might be true.
Sometimes a duck might not quack like a duck
or much look like a duck. It's a duck just the same.
But if you think differently, that's fine with me.
Your creed doesn't threaten me. I'm not afraid of the dark.

Someone's been telling you stories. But don't get the blues cuz you get to choose
what's right and what's true and what works for you. But only for you, not for me.

Stories are how we conceive of the world, and all of the stories are true.
